Black August in the Park
Join in honoring Black August — a month dedicated to remembering Black political prisoners, freedom fighters, and the legacies of the Black liberation movement. This annual gathering is inspired by our sister event in Durham, NC, and features community-centered programming that highlights local organizers, artists, and cultural workers dedicated to creating real change. What is Black August? Born in California prisons during the 1970s, Black August is a month of resistance, resilience, and remembrance. It’s a month-long observance that honors the sacrifices of political prisoners and the enduring struggle for Black liberation. This August, we’re honoring that legacy on the Blackacre Campus, complete with:
- Compelling, thought provoking discussions
- A space for affirmations and dreams.
- Art, food, music, and joy rooted in resistance.
- PLUS! A special guest performance by GRAMMY® nominated artist, picture book author, podcaster, and former Durham City Council member, Pierce Freelon!
